Conan O’Brien visits Greenland ‘on behalf of the United States’

Comedian Conan O’Brien said he visited Greenland “on behalf of the United States” to film an upcoming episode of his late-night show following reports that President Trump had suggested that the U.S. should attempt to purchase the island.

He said he “decided to fly to Greenland on behalf of the United States to make sure that the purchase” happens, in a preview of the “Conan” episode slated to air Sept. 3.

“I left Wednesday night and just got back,” the longtime late-night host added, noting that he took a camera crew for the upcoming special “Conan in Greenland.”

Reports surfaced earlier this month that Trump had floated the idea of buying Greenland. The president later told reporters he was interested in the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark for strategic reasons.

In the brief clip of his trip, O’Brien visits a statue of a topless woman called “Mother of the Sea.”

“I think Trump will be more interested after he sees this statue,” he joked.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has dismissed Trump’s suggestion of purchasing the territory, calling it “absurd.” The U.S. does plan, however, to open a consulate in Greenland.
