Ted Cruz praises Whoopi Goldberg ‘for speaking out for free speech’
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) commended “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg for defending free speech after she criticized actors Eric McCormack and Debra Messing for requesting the names of attendees at a fundraiser for President Trump.
“Thank you @WhoopiGoldberg for speaking out for free speech,” Cruz tweeted. “We may disagree on many issues, but you’re exactly right here.”
{mosads}On her show Tuesday, Goldberg cautioned the actors against asking for the identities of Trump’s Beverly Hills fundraiser attendees, saying it could lead to blacklisting.
“We had something called a blacklist and a lot of really good people were accused of stuff,” Goldberg said. “Nobody cared whether it was true or not. … In this country, people can vote for who they want to. That is one of the great rights of this country.”
Last week, Messing and McCormack called for the identification of Trump’s fundraiser attendees in tweets, which sparked backlash from the president and others.
“Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know,” Messing posted.
Since then, McCormack said his previous post had been “misinterpreted,” and Messing retweeted his post Wednesday.
