Mike Tyson says he’ll vote for the first time this year

Mike Tyson on Tuesday said that he will be voting this year for the first time after his home state Nevada restored voting rights to certain convicted felons last year.

The 54-year-old famous boxer announced he will be casting his vote over Twitter along with the hashtag #NationalVoterRegistrationDay. 

“This election will be my 1st time voting,” he posted. “I never thought I could because of my felony record. I’m proud to finally vote.”

He also included a link to a government guide on how to register to vote. 

Tyson received a six-year sentence after being convicted on one count of rape and two counts of deviant sexual conduct in 1992. He served three years in prison.

His conviction prevented him from voting until Nevada passed a law in 2019 that allows felons to vote once they complete their prison sentence. 

Activists have been pushing for felon voting rights to be restored in recent years. The Sentencing Project estimated that more than 6 million Americans could not vote in 2016 because they were convicted of felonies.

Tyson plans to face Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition boxing match on Nov. 28. The match was pushed back from September due to the virus, People reported.
