Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman to perform ahead of Super Bowl
Amanda Gorman is going from the inauguration to the Super Bowl.
The country’s first national youth poet laureate — who gained a massive following after reading her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration last week — will participate in ceremonies held ahead of Super Bowl LV next month.
Gorman, 22, will recite an original poem recognizing community leaders during the coronavirus pandemic, including educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and veteran James Martin, the NFL announced Wednesday.
Gorman’s poem, the league said, will be aired nationally and will focus on “these three individuals in recognition of their tremendous impact during an unprecedented year.”
The three leaders, who were named honorary captains at the game, will participate in the official on-field, pregame coin toss.
The Feb. 7 championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is airing on CBS and scheduled to take place in Tampa with a limited crowd in attendance, due to COVID-19. Singer The Weeknd is poised to perform during the halftime show.
