Dr. Oz, Port Authority officer revive collapsed passenger at airport
TV personality Mehmet Oz, host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” and a Port Authority police officer helped revive a New Jersey man who collapsed at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The man, who was not named, went into cardiac arrest and collapsed to the ground on Monday night in the baggage claim area of Terminal C at the airport.
Oz, who happened to be traveling at the airport at the same time, was notified of the situation by his daughter Arabella who was traveling with him, according to Fox 5 New York.
According to Oz, the man had fallen and hit his head on the ground and a small pool of blood formed around his head, Fox 5 reported.
“He was purple, like the color of an eggplant,” Oz said of the man in a recent interview on “Good Day New York.” He also noted that the man was not breathing and did not have a pulse.
Port Authority Officer Jeffrey Croissant, who was on duty on Monday night, also saw the man fall to the ground. Upon seeing Oz begin to perform chest compressions on the man, Croissant offered to perform CPR, Oz told the news program.
Croissant also called for back up and later another Port Authority officer arrived with a defibrillator. The first responders were able to restart his heart and help him start breathing again.
“He came back and his heart started to beat. I continued pushing air into his lungs and he began to pink up,” Oz said, according to the news outlet.
The 60-year-old man was then taken to the hospital and admitted to intensive care. Oz reported he is doing well, according to the news outlet.
Croissant said he did not initially recognize Oz and noted that “everyone wears masks.”
He later remarked that he was glad Oz was there to help once he was informed the TV doctor had been with him on Monday.
“What better help to have than a cardiac surgeon?” he said, according to Fox 5.
