Netflix edits hit show ‘Squid Game’ after woman receives hundreds of prank calls, texts
Netflix has edited a scene from its hit show “Squid Game” to remove a South Korean woman’s phone number after she complained of receiving hundreds of unsolicited calls and texts.
South Korea resident Kim Gil-young told local Korean news outlet SBS News that since the premiere of the show, which is centered on people competing in children’s games for millions of dollars, she has fielded hundreds of prank calls.
In the show, the protagonist Gi-hun shows an invitation card to the games, which also displays Kim’s phone number.
“I’ve been unceasingly getting calls and texts 24/7 to the point where my daily life has become difficult,” Kim said, according to SBS News.
Kim told the outlet that the bombardment of calls and texts has affected her ability to discern calls for her business. She has owned a dessert shop that using that number for nearly 10 years, SBS News reported.
“This is not Squid Game. I sell handmade sugar-free sweet bean jellies,” Kim replied to one fan of the show who was inquiring about how they could join the game.
“I’ve had to delete more than 4,000 numbers,” she told SBS News.
Netflix on Wednesday said that it would work to address Kim’s problem.
“Together with the production company, we are working to resolve this matter, including editing scenes with phone numbers where necessary,” Netflix said, according to USA Today.
