Last-minute developments

Seven Senate races are now not only within the margin of error but within one
to two points or tied — in Illinois, Washington state, West Virginia,
Pennsylvania, California, Nevada and Colorado. House races are tightening as well.
And now there is news that early voting shows Democrats are not glued to
the couch throwing food at the television set, unenthusiastic or
unwilling to vote. They are actually
turning out. The Associated Press said the early Democratic turnout gives
the party “the edge in many states and big counties.” 
 
Republicans are inches from huge victories, and they know they can’t blow it.
But just in time for Election Day, the controversial figures on the GOP team
are making headlines.

Sharron Angle tells Latino students they look Asian. Joe Miller,
Mr. Constitution himself, has his private security detail arrest members of the
press. Christine O’Donnell counts members of the media as part of
her campaign fundraising team. Taken together, it makes the fact
that Ken Buck compared homosexuality to alcoholism seem pretty ho-hum. And
hey, we’re not noting anything Carl Paladino said or did recently, since he
isn’t actually capable of winning his race, like the rest of these candidates
are.
 
Democrats can’t match the energy on the Republican side. But they can get their
own base voters mad enough to vote and they hope they can depress independent
voters by painting the candidates from the other party as extreme or even
wacko. It could make the differences on the margins in a few races.
 
Despite the growing wave, with early votes showing a Democratic pulse, the next
11 days really do count. After all, a 60 seat pick-up is far different from a
42-seat pick-up.
