Tax cuts for families who need them (versus those who don’t)
As I listened to the president’s wide-ranging press conference, I was
struck by a comment he made in regard to the income tax system
currently in place in America.
When asked whether he would support the extension of tax cuts for the
top 3 percent of earners of the population, the president responded
that “I support tax cuts for families who need it versus those that
don’t.” What a remarkable statement.
We will overlook, for a moment, that more than 40 percent of the American people pay no federal income tax whatsoever. We will overlook that the top 5 percent of earners pay a substantial majority of all income tax collected in the country today.
What I will focus on, however, is the disturbing pattern this president has had in this debate in inflaming issues and engaging in class warfare.
Looking back to the historical record, neither President Kennedy nor President Reagan nor President George W. Bush made the distinction between extending tax cuts to “those families that need it versus those that don’t.” As president of the United States, Obama has a higher and more noble responsibility to pull the country and her citizens together regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender or income states. We are one nation under God, with liberties and justice for all — not those whom President Obama believes require such protection and those who don’t.
