Reid is right: Republican shutdown looms
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is absolutely right. If the
government shuts down it will be solely and exclusively
the responsibility of Republicans who would rather shut down the
government than agree to a good-faith compromise with the president and
Democrats.
Reid and Democrats have offered to meet Republicans more than halfway.
The Republicans would rather fight their ideological wars and attack
programs and groups they put on their lengthening enemy lists.
This is not the time for Republicans to attack reproductive rights,
National Public Radio, Planned Parenthood or clean air or to wage any of
their many holy wars.
There are now Tea Party rallies where shouting adherents chant: Shut it down! Shut it down!
Reid is right. If Republicans shut down the government by refusing to accept a compromise, it will be a Republican shutdown, Republican responsibility, causing Republican damage to the national economy.
Republicans will learn a hard lesson very fast: that voters did not send them to Washington to shut down the government to win applause from Tea Party shouters who chant: “Shut it down. Shut it down.”
