Obama Gains Support in Iraq
What a coup!
Barack Obama may not yet have won the election, but it looks like he’s already won the war.
From the very beginning, Obama opposed the war in Iraq. Not only that, he proposed a plan to get out of Iraq by starting to bring American troops home as soon as he arrived in the White House, and then continuing to bring them home one or two brigades a month, with a goal of getting all troops out of Iraq within 16 months.
It’s a goal George Bush ridiculed as surrender. A goal John McCain equated with letting al Qaeda declare victory.
Well, guess what? Both of them suddenly look like fools. Because Obama’s goal of getting all troops out of Iraq has now been embraced by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. And, suddenly, it is Barack Obama, not George Bush, and certainly not John McCain, who is taking the lead in finding a solution to this long, bloody, unnecessary and unpopular war.
Which is great news because, with al-Maliki’s support, the American military can start making plans to begin the re-deployment of our troops, some of whom will go to Afghanistan, in the first weeks of 2009. And the Iraqi government will finally step up to the plate and begin to take responsibility for running its own country.
Isn’t it interesting that someone who is not in power can come up with a way out of Iraq that those who are in power cannot?
Which gives me great hope for the possibilities of an Obama administration. Just think. If Barack Obama can find a solution to the war in Iraq before he even gets to the White House, imagine what great things he can accomplish, once he’s sworn into office.
