Bush (almost) faces music in Switzerland

We know he broke the law. He even admits he broke the law. And finally George
W. Bush was forced to face the music — almost!

In a deliciously ironic twist, the former president has been forced to cancel a
long-planned trip to Switzerland next weekend, to give a speech and sell books
— because he risked being slapped in handcuffs the minute he walked off the
plane.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations had petitioned the
government of Switzerland to seize Bush and hold him responsible for war
crimes, including torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

And, of course, they had a clear-cut case against him. Switzerland signed a
treaty making the use of waterboarding and other forms of torture a war crime.
In his memoir, George Bush brags about ordering waterboarding at Gitmo and says
he’d do it all over again. Bingo! Once he steps onto Swiss soil, lock him up
and put him on trial.

Now, some may say it’s sad that a former president of the United States cannot
travel freely anywhere in the world.

No, what’s really sad is that it takes another country to hold our leaders
responsible for their war crimes — while the United States, which also signed
that treaty, merely looks the other way.
