John Kerry stands tall
{mosads}As the situation will unfold over the coming days, I will simply say this about policy toward Syria: I opposed going to war in Iraq and I support military action to hold Syrian leaders accountable today. My views are similar to the views of retired Marine Corps Gen. Anthony Zinni.
The decision to go to war in Iraq was wrong. The policy of President Obama and Kerry — to hold Syrian leaders accountable for their crimes — is right. Congress should be fully briefed and consulted, a process that has already begun. The War Powers Act does give the president the authority to take limited military action for a limited time.
International law does give the United States and other nations of conscience the right to protect the people of Syria — and Israel and the Middle East and the NATO nations — from the potential plague of criminal use of chemical weapons that constitutes a threat to nations and a crime against humanity.
I will have more to say about these matters soon. For now, I want to reiterate my support for Obama’s efforts and Secretary of State John Kerry, who stand tall seeking peace between Israel and Palestinians and protection from the criminal barbarism of the Syrian regime.
