Harry Reid speaks the truth

Did Harry Reid go over the line again?

The majority leader’s been accused of making an insensitive, racist
remark when asked to comment on anti-immigrant measures recently put
forth by Republicans. “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage
could be Republican,” he replied.

Over the line? No way. All Harry Reid did is speak the truth.

Why would anybody vote for a party that’s waging war against them? And there’s no doubt Republicans have once again declared war on Latinos. They’ve done so every election year, starting in California in 1994 with Proposition 187.

This year alone they’ve started a campaign to change the 14th Amendment to deny citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born in this country. They tried to legalize racial profiling in Arizona and now have introduced an even more draconian measure in Florida. And they’ve refused to join Democrats in supporting comprehensive immigration reform.

Meanwhile, they’ve opposed the extension of unemployment benefits, emergency funding to states to save teachers’ jobs and tax benefits for small business — while blocking tax cuts for the middle class unless they’re accompanied by tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

Years ago, the father of former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts reportedly said that any African-American who votes Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.

Harry Reid’s right. The same could be said today of any Latino who votes Republican. And, by the way, any gay, lesbian or woman, too.
