Stupidity knows no party

Senatorial candidate Todd Akin yesterday made one of the most egregious
remarks in the history of politics in America, stating that when a woman
is raped, her body goes into a defensive mode that prevents pregnancy.

All of which is complete nonsense. To his credit, he quickly recognized
that this was a terrible faux pas and apologized, stating that he had
misspoken.

In a supposedly enlightened age, the concepts Akin posited are ridiculous — and particularly embarrassing for the GOP, because, of course, the mainstream media will try to portray these idiotic statements as representative of all Republicans. This is no closer to the truth than to say that Joe Biden’s statements of putting people back in chains are representative of all Democrats.

{mosads}Hopefully Akin himself will be able to objectively assess whether his remaining in the race will be detrimental to his party and will make an appropriate choice by 5 p.m. today, the deadline for the party being able to replace him with another candidate.

Unfortunately, this will not be the last incredibly stupid thing that will be said by an individual from one or the other party. We the people have to be smart enough to recognize these gaffes for what they are and not let a biased media whip us into an inappropriate frenzy.
