The NAACP and the ‘Negro dialect’
What I found particularly awkward and offensive is the apparent acceptance of a “Negro dialect” I’ve been previously unaware of. If any elected Republican official had uttered remarks identical to Reid’s, the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus and other groups would be demanding the resignation of that individual. The hypocrisy and clear double standard in play here is galling.
I suppose speaking in a “Negro dialect” means that if you are white and say offensive things about light-skinned blacks, no problem. If you’re white and a Republican and utter the same remarks, you’re a racist and should be removed from public office immediately.

Speaking of being awkward and offensive, isn’t it ironic that immediately following Reid’s apology to President Obama, he hit the phones to call several African-American leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, to apologize further? As if Al Sharpton is the consigliere for all black people?
Here’s where the “Negro dialect” double standard referenced above comes into play: If what Reid said in reference to Mr. Obama wasn’t offensive, why did he rush to apologize to the person many whites believe speaks on behalf of black Americans? As if such a person existed. How truly pathetic.
