I forgot Chris Matthews was white
Maybe there should be a little group meeting in a basement of a church somewhere in Washington where Matthews, Joe Biden, Harry Reid and a few others from their planet can get together and talk quietly about race. They might start a little symposium, showing the Bruce clips of the political handlers trying to teach Lyndon Johnson to say, “Negro” without that distinctive West Texas inflection that made it sound like something else. They could show clippings from “Undercover Brother” where whites and blacks appear in full caricature images from the 1970s.
Those times are still these times. But my kids would not understand, nor would most kids today under 20. When we met Obama up here in the frozen north at a local high school in Littleton, N.H., during the campaign, not one kid in the audience had to forget that Obama was black, because no one noticed.
