The vanishing act

Macmillan successfully objected to Amazon’s practice. Other companies — Google
and Apple the latest — are entering the electronic-book business. Amazon cuts
its price for new hardcover books by 55 percent, as does Wal-Mart. Publishers
fear that e-book sales, which are too low, will hurt writers, publishers and
bookstores. And as Amazon and other wholesalers start publishing books, in
addition to distributing them, the whole book world could change.

We may be saving forests in the process, which is good for the environment; but
I can’t imagine a world without books in hand. Then again, I couldn’t imagine a
world without newspapers.
