OK, so apparently Mitt Romney is wearing the frontrunner crown this week, heading to Iowa to win that straw poll he couldn’t lose if he tried because no one with adequate poll numbers is showing up to take him on.

I have showed restraint for weeks and not revisited the dog episode — remember poor Seamus strapped to the top of the family car? Yes, he was traveling in a dog kennel he dirtied at high speeds, but it still tells us all we need to know about Romney. His defenders went into high gear about it not being pet abuse but it still paints an all-too-telling picture about his decision-making skills and his strategic thinking, a la Clark Griswold I would say. If you can’t channel Chevy Chase in “Vacation” I think you still get the picture.

But now there is news Romney couldn’t stop flopping and fell in to a trap laid by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) who is always ribbing Romney for not being pro-life enough. In response to a question from George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Romney said he would support the GOP platform that includes the Human Life Amendment, making it clear that the 14th Amendment provides the same protections to the unborn. This winter Romney had been on record stating he wants Roe v. Wade overturned but then wants the states to handle the abortion issue because he doesn’t support a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

And last week The Mittster got seriously lucky that Sen. Barack Obama took all the oxygen away from his comments in Iowa that flattered Hezbollah for building health clinics, schools and ultimately support in southern Lebanon. “That kind of diplomacy is something that would help America become stronger around the world and people understand that our interest is an interest toward modernity and goodness and freedom for all people of the world.”

Hey, it’s not that Romney is wrong about Hezbollah, but sounding like you are calling Hezbollah’s efforts “diplomacy”? It kind of made me think about the unsuccessful windshield he built inside Seamus’s dog carrier on top of the car. Gotta make sure that frontrunner crown doesn’t blow off, Clark.
