Assumptions

The general assumption among the media is that Barack Obama will be president.

The general assumption among the Obama campaign is that Barack Obama will be president.

The general assumption among Democratic lobbyists is that Barack Obama will be president.

And the general assumption among inside-the-Beltway Republicans is that Barack Obama will be president.

Maybe they are all correct. Maybe Barack Obama will be president.

Maybe most voters will ignore Joe the Plumber and his concerns that Obama will raise his taxes.

Maybe most voters will ignore Joe the Senator’s concerns that Obama’s election will bring about an international crisis on par with the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Maybe most voters will ignore the fact that Barack Obama is the most liberal and least experienced presidential nominee in our nation’s history.

Maybe most voters will ignore the fact that by electing Barack Obama, the American people will be giving a blank check to a Democratic Congress whose approval ratings are the lowest in our nation’s history.

Maybe.

Certainly, that is what the media polls would have you believe. CBS has a poll that shows Obama up 17. ABC has a poll with Obama up nine. NBC has a poll with Obama up 10.

But other polls tell a different story. AP shows that Obama is only up one. George Washington University has a poll that shows Obama only up two. Investor’s Business Daily has a poll that shows Obama only up four.

All of these polls show that Joe the Plumber and his friends (better known as middle-class America) are moving to McCain, because they are tired of Obama’s elitism, his tax plans and his liberalism.

I don’t assume that Obama will win. I think this is a very close race, and I still believe that McCain has a decent chance of winning.

This need to assume that Obama will win is part of a conspiracy of wishful thinkers. They hope that Obama will win, so they assume that it will be the case.

But the old adage holds true. Don’t assume. It makes an ass of u and me.

I don’t assume. You shouldn’t either.
