McCain Uses Soldiers to Score Cheap Political Points

How pathetic can you get?

In a desperate attempt to undermine Barack Obama’s phenomenally successful trip to Europe and the Middle East, John McCain is running an ad accusing him of refusing to meet with wounded American soldiers at Landstuhl Air Force Base in Germany.

Obviously, Obama doesn’t care for our troops, say McCain and his campaign goons.

What an outrageous comment. Here’s the truth.

One. Barack Obama has often visited wounded veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also visited with our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Two. Obama WANTED to go to Landstuhl. It was on his schedule. But the Pentagon — on orders of the Bush White House — told Obama that, if he came, they would label his visit a campaign event.

Three. Therefore, not wanting to look like he was using wounded soldiers as political props, Obama canceled the visit.

For Obama, it was a no-win situation. Had he gone to Landstuhl, Republicans would have accused him of exploiting troops for political gain. By not going, they accused him of not caring about the troops.

Bottom line: This was a cheap trick by the still-Rovean White House, trying to throw a monkey wrench into Obama’s plans.

Yes, somebody’s exploiting the troops, all right. But it’s not Barack Obama. It’s George Bush and John McCain.
