Three Cheers for The New Yorker!
OK, for all of you people who were upset about the cover of this week’s New Yorker, I only have three words: Get a life!
I know, I know, both the Obama and the McCain campaigns condemned the cover as incendiary. Well, they ought to get a life, too. This campaign is already going overboard on political correctness. It’s getting so you can’t say anything critical, sarcastic, or even funny about either candidate.
And, let’s face it, this week’s New Yorker cover is laugh-out-loud funny!
Not only that, it makes a great point. Which is to show how ridiculous are all those rumors circulating on the Internet about Barack Obama being a Muslim. And what better way to show it than by dressing him up in Muslim garb in the Oval Office with a portrait of Osama bin Laden on the wall, and the American flag burning in the fireplace.
Don’t Americans have a sense of humor anymore? As Bill Maher wonders: “If you can’t do irony on the cover of The New Yorker, where can you do it?” And as Stephen Colbert said about the cover: “It’s a perfectly valid satirical point to make — and it’s perfectly valid for Obama not to like it.”
All those rumors about Obama’s being a closet Muslim? They’re ridiculous. And what better way to show it than by exposing them in their most extreme form.
So, my advice is: Relax. Buy The New Yorkerand have a good laugh. God knows we won’t have many between now and November.
