McCain, the RNC and Campaign Finance
I’ve got to love the fix the McCain team is in right now. Talk about hypocrisy and flip-flopping. They accept the federal system of matching funds and limits when they are desperate, then they refuse to abide by them even after they have gotten on the ballot in numerous states. Then they raise over $100 million to spend not in the primaries but for the general election. And don’t forget that much of this money comes from high-priced lobbyists and corporate special interests, which McCain said he was against.
And now John McCain goes after Obama by saying he “has revealed himself to be just another typical politician who will do and say whatever is most expedient.” Gee, that’s rich, literally.
Yes, and oh, by the way, he used his wife’s corporate private jet all last year, something he said he was against. Oh, he was against it, all right — before he was for it and USED it! And McCain received a $4 million line of credit, with the promise of $5.8 million in taxpayer funds he was just waiting to collect. Of course, again, taking the money and running — about as fast as he could from the rules and regulations that were attached.
So, all along the McCain camp wanted to have their cake and eat it too — in this latest case, they wanted to get federal funds for the general election, spend unlimited “primary” money these past five months on the general election, and stand back and watch as groups Swift-Boat Barack Obama (remember, that one group spent $18 million “independently” against John Kerry). What a deal, all the while taking as much as they want from the special interests and funneling it to the Republican National Committee.
McCain is in a real bind now — how many flip-flop-flips can you do before this campaign is done?
