McCain’s Goblins

Remember that great moment Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) had at the GOP debate just over a week ago when he mocked Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) appropriation for a museum commemorating Woodstock? Perhaps you heard all about it during the Fenn-Donatelli debate on the subject on HillTube. McCain even got a standing ovation after he said, “Now, my friends, I wasn’t there. I’m sure it was a cultural and pharmaceutical event. I was, I was tied up at the time.” His delivery was perfect, the subject made to order for the crowd, and the moment will go down in debate history.

But now the goblins have come out of the woodwork to boo-hoo on McCain’s Woodstock moment, and they won’t allow him a trick or a treat. When McCain cut an ad showing his ovation, Fox News Channel officials sent a cease-and-desist letter to McCain rejecting the request to use the video with the Fox News logo in the corner. McCain — once chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee and no fool — said the use of the 18-second clip in the commercial is consistent with “fair use” rights.

But you didn’t think the Democrats would stand idly by, did you? Media Matter for America, which now regularly issues press releases defending Clinton, wrote today that “The Situation Room” on CNN pumped the story several times while ignoring the fact that McCain actually missed the vote to table the amendment. Sounds like Barack Obama, doesn’t it?

After all he has been through, why can’t McCain have a little fun?
