The State of the President
Like most Americans, I watched President Bush’s final State of the Union address last night and was struck by the man himself. It’s obvious that the Democrats have become galvanized by the single goal of reversing what Bush has done over the last eight years. Many label him as the worst president in modern times and lament that he has us fighting an immoral war.
For all the Bush haters (and there are enough around) I will admit that after seeing and hearing him last night, I have no regrets over the fact that I voted for him in 2000 and 2004. Bush reminded us that under his watch there has not been another attack on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001, and believe me — those cowards and murderers have tried. Bush is a wonderful faceplate for this nation. He is always positive, upbeat in the face of chaos and always finding the best in the American people. It’s important for our leader to give us hope in the time of economic and global turmoil.
Bush certainly has not aged like presidents of the past and candidly speaking our economy has yet to face the recession that many have predicted over the last year. The Senate should definitely pass his stimulus package, for it’s the only short-term solution to this mortgage crisis that we’re now facing. No, it’s not the long-term solution, but it’s all we have that they all can agree on for now.
I still praise the president for returning standards and accountability to education through No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and his boldness to win legislative battles with a Democratic-controlled Congress, despite his lame-duck status. And yes, the Congress will continue to bend to this president’s wishes until he leaves office. How about that for a supposedly weak president? You show them, Mr. President!
