President Obama and the day when race won’t matter

So does this make me a racist? I am an American who happens to be black. I voted for Obama. Yet many of the policies touted by President Obama do not sit well with me. I do not support a government takeover of the healthcare industry. I do not support economic policies that will sow debt into our economy for decades, and possibly even bankrupt the nation. The president just saddled our grandchildren with crippling debt. Where, one can’t help but wonder, are the jobs?

Does this discontent make me a racist? That’s the question that I posed on my radio show yesterday. A gentleman named Darrell called in to address the issue. Darrell explained that his natural inclination was to assume that white voters were abandoning Obama because he is black — not because of his policies. But then Darrell admitted that people like me are making it hard for him to simply blame racism. Darrell admitted that my disenchantment with the president was genuine. Still, he just couldn’t let go of the loyalty oath that he signed to the nation’s first black president — and so his knee-jerk response was to blame racism for the president’s eroding support.

Darrell is in denial. He is not alone. For those of you who cannot extricate the president’s policies from the color of his skin, consider this: Where are the new jobs? Is government healthcare reform going to help or hurt the economy? Are your kids still dying in Afghanistan? Are your small businesses benefiting from the bailout? The answers to these questions should be obvious.
