Aligning for Justice Issues
Yesterday, the Alliance for Justice celebrated its 30th anniversary before a packed hall in Washington. A film showed some of its three-decades-long highlights. Speakers congratulated the now-venerable organization’s successes, and the audience warmed to the oncoming battle over Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
The Alliance for Justice is a national association of 80 civil liberties and civil rights organizations around the country that share a need for issue advocacy on behalf of consumers, minority groups and the environment. It also trains not-for-profit organizations to advocate effectively within legal limitations. Its chief work is on judicial nominations. For the past eight years (I was on its board of directors), its work was fighting against the worst of Bush appointments. The future promises to be active and positive.
Happy birthday, Alliance for Justice. Many more.
