… During a Senate hearing on her nomination to be secretary of state, Mrs. Clinton was asked to support committee suggestions for a ban on foreign gifts to Bill Clinton’s foundation or at least more frequent reporting. Her basic response was that the current disclosure agreement between the Clinton Foundation and the Obama transition team answers all questions. But it clearly does not.
… As Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said during the hearing, foreign governments, corporations and individuals may look upon the opportunity to make a gift to Mr. Clinton’s interests as a “means to gain favor with the secretary of state.”
… In defending an agreement that allows her husband to continue to solicit foreign gifts and only report some of them annually, Mrs. Clinton indeed gave the appearance of putting his interests first.
She should stop dodging the issue, and accept Sen. Lugar’s recommendation. Until she does, the questions won’t go away.
