Ferguson library gains over 7K donations
As boycotts of numerous businesses imperil Ferguson, Mo., authors have taken to Twitter to encourage people to support at least one locale — the Ferguson Municipal Public Library.
According to USA Today, the library has received donations from over 7,000 people.
{mosads}On Thanksgiving, the library expressed its gratitude in a tweet: “Board member re donations: OH MY SWEET LORD!!!!! The goodness of people far outweighs the hate. I am weeping as I type — my heart is full.”
Neil Gaiman, popular author of graphic novel “The Sandman” and fantasy novel “American Gods,” encouraged the outpouring of donations in less than 140 characters also: “We can donate directly to the #Ferguson library through their website. They are open while schools are closed.”
Ferguson’s library has remained open through devastating protests in the 21,000-person town following a grand jury decision not to indict the officer who fatally shot Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager.
Many local schools and businesses have remained closed and even boarded up since protests broke out following the Monday decision.
The library has held to its promise, inspiring authors to take to Twitter.
Joelle Charbonneau, the New York Times bestselling author of the young adult series “The Testing,” tweeted, “I have almost 40 authors on the list of those sending books to #Ferguson kids through the @fergusonlibrary and the list continues to grow!!!”
