Some of the “interesting people” Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) follows on Twitter include singer Barbra Streisand, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist and, of course, plenty of people in Colorado.

He told The Hill that he uses Twitter to express his “true voice” but also to listen to his followers.

Rep. Polis: Is there any other way?

Q: When did you join Twitter?
A: I joined in October 2008, during my first campaign for Congress. It’s just a great way of being able to interact with constituents in real time. I also follow a number of interesting people and use it to get news and information as well.

Q: What do you see as the most significant purpose of Twitter for you?
A: I try to keep my tweets interesting, personal and fun. If I have something important to say, I do use Twitter to promote it. I also re-tweet things that I think are worth others seeing. But it’s important to have a true voice. People don’t want to just see a bunch of press releases.

Q: Example of a “best” Twitter moment?
A: I live-tweeted one of the Republican presidential debates, and it netted me a few hundred new followers. At its best, Twitter allows for a real conversation in real time for events like that.

Q: Example of a “worst” Twitter moment?
A: Every now and then I tweet out something with a spelling error, but it’s forgivable because it’s Twitter!
