{mosads}Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren (D) predicted an optimistic 96 wins for her hometown Boston Red Sox — six and a half wins better than Las Vegas projected before the season opened. But Warren’s optimism (which also included picking outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury for the Most Valuable Player award) likely has an inkling of political opportunism.
Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley, the last Democrat to challenge now-Sen. Scott Brown (R) for the Senate seat, hurt her campaign with a pair of Red Sox-related gaffes.
Coakley’s suggestion that Red Sox hero Curt Schilling — who endorsed Brown — was a “Yankee fan” earned her the scorn of the Boston faithful. Coakley also bristled at the idea of campaigning with fans outside the stadium.
“As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?’’ Coakley said when asked if she was being too passive while campaigning.
Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) also got in on the Red Sox Twitter love.
The Opening Day excitement extended down to the nation’s capital, where Mayor Vincent Gray cheered on the Washington Nationals.
