On Twitter, lament over Kyl’s plan to retire
“He will be missed,” Freshman Arizona Representative David Schweikert tweeted following Kyl’s announcement. Schweikert also linked to a statement about Kyl.
“His tireless advocacy on behalf of our state for over twenty years has made Arizona a better place,” Schweikert said. “I also think it is worth recognizing Senator Kyl’s conservative leadership over the course of his career. He has a long and distinguished record as a conservative leader that won’t soon be forgotten.”
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) took to Twitter to respond, as well. “@SenJonKyl has secured a place in our nation’s history as a great lawmaker, patriot, and leader,” he said. Lieberman called Kyl “a great guardian of America’s security and freedom.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also tweeted a statement that read, “Jon is one of the smartest members of the Senate and knows how to get things done. What he brings to the table will be very difficult to replace.”
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) tweeted his response to the announcement, as well:
“.@SenJonKyl will be missed in the Senate. Strong and effective leader I’ve greatly enjoyed working with.”
Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) will reportedly run for Kyl’s position as Whip, a step up the Republican chain of command in the Senate.
“Year in and year out, Jon Kyl has been everyone’s nominee for Most Valuable Player in the United States Senate. We will miss his leadership,” Alexander said in a statement.
