Pelosi calls young Egyptians ‘inspiration’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said, “I’m pleased Pres Mubarak has heard & heeded the voice of the Egyptian ppl,” according to a tweet from the Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

I applaud President Mubarak’s decision to step down – this should be the beginning, not the end, of Egypt’s transition to democracy.

“The people in #Egypt have spoken and non-violently achieved a historic victory. The military must allow for continued democratic transition,” tweeted Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.).

“Critical moment for Egypt & region. Egyptian ppl deserve both stability & freedom. Very hopeful this transition allows for both,” tweeted Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.). Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) expressed similar hopes for a peaceful and orderly transition, respectively, as did Rep Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.).

“This is huge for the advancement of democracy. Let’s hope the glide path remains non-violent and democratic,” tweeted Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.).

“We are all Egyptians now,” tweeted Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.). California Democratic Reps. Grace Napolitano and George Miller offered congratulations via Twitter as well.

“A positive step, an historic opportunity – and major challenge – for the people of #Egypt,” said Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.).

“Delighted,” tweeted Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.). “Military needs to assist free and fair elections ASAP.”
