De Blasio slams Graham’s abortion bill

New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio (D) slammed via Twitter Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) strict abortion ban bill, which he planned to introduce Thursday.

De Blasio was elected Tuesday in a landslide. He will be the first Democratic mayor of the city in 20 years and succeeds current Mayor Mike Bloomberg (I) in January.

During his administration, Bloomberg has not shied away from criticizing lawmakers in Washington. He executed a large lobbying campaign this year to push Congress to pursue gun control legislation.

Graham’s bill would be de Blasio’s first foray into Washington politics as the soon-to-be mayor.

The legislation is a companion bill to Rep. Trent Frank’s (R-Ariz.) bill, which the House passed in June.

The measure would make it illegal for a woman to have an abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy. Franks introduced it earlier this year, and had 184 co-sponsors, including Democrats.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) announced a press conference Thursday to stand against the legislation with her Democratic colleagues Sens. Barbara Boxer (Calif.) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.).
