Giffords’s husband: Gun control ‘can no longer wait’

“This time our response must consist of more than regret, sorrow and condolence,” he wrote. “The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about our gun laws — and how they can be reformed and better enforced to prevent gun violence and death in America. This can no longer wait.”

Other House Democrats have renewed the push for action
on policy related to gun violence in the wake of Friday’s shooting. The
shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., resulted in
multiple fatalities. The Associated Press reports 27 dead, including 20
children, as well as one identified shooter.
 
Giffords, a Democrat who represented Arizona, resigned her position earlier this year in order to focus on her recovery from being shot in the head in a mass shooting in January 2011.

Multiple people were injured in that shooting, including Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.), Giffords’s aide who went on to fill her seat in Congress.

“As those of us in Tucson know, senseless acts such as these tear at the very fabric of a community,” Barber said in a statement. “In times like this, we come together to support each other. To the people of Newtown, we are with you today and in the days, weeks and months ahead.”
