Huelskamp: Trusting Obama with border like trusting Clinton with daughter

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) on Wednesday said trusting President Obama to implement border security measures is like trusting former President Bill Clinton with your daughter.

Heulskamp offered the message on Twitter the same day House Republicans met to discuss the conference’s strategy on immigration reform.

The suggestive quip — hinting at the former president’s marital infidelities — came shortly after House Republicans exited their meeting. House GOP leadership said in a joint statement that they did not trust the White House to implement border security provisions of the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform package.

{mosads}”The American people want our border secured, our laws enforced, and the problems in our immigration system fixed to strengthen our economy,” the Republican leaders said. “But they don’t trust a Democratic-controlled Washington, and they’re alarmed by the president’s ongoing insistence on enacting a single, massive, Obamacare-like bill rather than pursuing a step-by-step, common-sense approach to actually fix the problem.”

The leaders went on to suggest that the recent decision to delay the employer mandate in the president’s signature health care law was evidence the president couldn’t be trusted to implement border security measures.

“The president has also demonstrated he is willing to unilaterally delay or ignore significant portions of laws he himself has signed, raising concerns among Americans that this administration cannot be trusted to deliver on its promises to secure the border and enforce laws as part of a single, massive bill like the one passed by the Senate,” the lawmakers said.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said earlier Wednesday that Obama “has demonstrated by his support for the enormous increase in resources for even greater enhancement of border security placed into the Senate immigration reform bill that he supports even further improvements in our border security.”

“I mean, that’s just a fact,” he continued. “I mean, you can pretend that it’s not because you want to find a way to do the wrong thing, or you can acknowledge the progress that’s been made on border security.”

Asked specifically if the White House could ensure they would enforce, on time, the new eVerify mandate and other border security measures, Carney said the programs would be among Obama’s top priorities.

“Absolutely, he would do everything he can, as he has for the first four and a half years of his presidency, to enhance our border security,” Carney said. “And he’s got the record to prove it.”
