Corzine again needles Christie on Rove conversation
Gov. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) on Friday continued to press his Republican opponent Chris Christie about a conversation he had with former top Bush adviser Karl Rove regarding a run for governor.
The incumbent governor attacked Christie via Twitter:
Why won’t @christiefornj answer questions about his convo’s w/ @KarlRove? When did he speak to Rove? Did Rove call him? Did he call Rove?
The Newark Star-Ledger reported on Wednesday that Rove disclosed the conversation he had with Christie while the latter served as U.S. Attorney.
Corzine’s campaign seized on the news, tweeting links to the Star-Ledger story and the Briefing Room throughout the day on Wednesday.
U.S. Attorney’s are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activities during their tenure, but both Rove and Christie’s campaign denied any wrongdoing.
“In this informal conversation, Chris discussed with Mr. Rove the fact he was being urged to run for elected office and Mr. Rove in turn offered to recommend people who could help Chris reach a decision if he eventually seriously considered running for office,” Christie spokeswoman Maria Comella said in a statement.
Corzine appeared to respond to a Twitter jab from Christie earlier in the day.
The Republican candidate tweeted:
@JonCorzine claimed of preventing economic downturn while soaring # of NJ homeowners in trouble – foreclosure filings risen by more 30%
