A House Republican on Tuesday turned a phrase in Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s native tongue, perhaps hoping he would hear her loud and clear.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), who is of Cuban descent, criticized the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States (OAS) for letting Chavez off the hook for cracking down on the free press. She tweeted:
The UN and OAS doing NADA while Chavez continues his assault on the media. They are silent on these egregious violations on a free press.
A U.S. intelligence report dated August 3 said that the Chavez regime’s recent closure 32 private radio stations and proposed law to prosecute “media crimes” shows that the dictator is “moving forcefully to silence critics.”
Ros-Lehtinen also criticized the OAS when they suspended Honduras’ membership following a military coup there in late June.
