Appointments

• The president has nominated Thomas M. Harrigan as deputy administrator of drug enforcement within the Department of Justice. Currently the chief of operations in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Harrigan is the principal adviser to the DEA administrator on all enforcement-related matters. He started with the DEA as a special agent in 1987, serving in Bangkok, Thailand, among other locations. He has received several agency awards and commendations, including the Presidential Rank award of Distinguished Executive in December 2009. He has an M.A. from Seton Hall University.

• The president intends to nominate Mara Rudman to be assistant administrator for the Middle East with the U.S. Agency for International Development. She currently is the deputy envoy and chief of staff to the special envoy for Middle East peace at the State Department. She also has served as deputy assistant to the president and executive secretary for the National Security Council. From 2005 to 2009, she headed Quorum Strategies LLC, an international strategic consulting firm, and was also a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, specializing in national security issues and the Middle East. She served as a deputy national security adviser and National Security Council chief of staff under President Clinton from 1999 to 2001. She also was chief counsel to the House Foreign Affairs Committee under then-Chairman Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.). She has an A.B. from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
