Under Contract

•The Energy Department awarded Cray Inc. a $97 million contract, according to a company press release. Cray will “upgrade the Cray XT5 supercomputer … located at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to a new Cray XK6 supercomputer.” The “multi-year, multi-phase contract” begins with Phase 1, which the company projects to “generate more than $60 million in product revenue and is targeted to be completed in 2011.” The upgraded computer is expected to be “one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers,” allowing scientists to solve “some of today’s most pressing energy and environmental challenges.”

{mosads}•The Navy awarded General Dynamics a $37 million “cost-plus-fee” contract on Oct. 7. The company will provide “program management, planning, engineering, design, liaison, scheduling, labor and procurement of incidental material” services. If possible options are exercised, the contract would be worth almost $135 million. General Dynamics will complete its work in San Diego and expects to finish projects by December 2014.
