Consumer spending ticks up
Consumer spending slightly increased .5 percent in August, according to Commerce Department estimates released Monday.
People in the United States spent $57.5 billion more than they did in the previous month, and economists took it as a sign that the economy is continuing to improve.
In July, consumer spending barely increased, so Monday’s report was welcome news to economists who were concerned the recovery had stalled.
Commerce officials reported last month that consumer spending had increased less than 0.1 percent in July.
On Friday, Labor Department officials will release September’s jobs report.
