Hawaii lawmaker fights volcano

On the eve of the midterm elections, a Hawaii Democrat has been activated by the National Guard to join the emergency response to an active volcano in the state.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will join roughly 80 members of Hawaii’s Army National Guard in tackling the Kilauea crisis, her office announced Monday night.

{mosads}The volcano, among the most active in the world, has recently emitted lava flows threatening the rural town of Pahoa, on the island of Hawaii.

“During this time, she will be unable to accept media requests or make public statements related to her official congressional duties,” her office said in a statement.

The 33-year-old joined Hawaii’s National Guard in 2003 and served two tours in the Iraq War. She currently holds the rank of captain.

A freshman, Gabbard won her seat last year with 81 percent of the vote and is considered a shoo-in for a second term.

The length of her activation is not yet known, her office said.
