Kerry to give Iran update from Vienna
Secretary of State John Kerry will make a statement in Vienna on Thursday about the ongoing nuclear talks with Iran, which face a new deadline of Friday.
About the time he was scheduled to speak, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday negotiators continue to talk, but a deal “has not been reached yet.”
{mosads}Six world powers are seeking to finalize an agreement with Tehran that would cut off its path to a nuclear weapon for at least a decade in exchange for relief from international sanctions that have crippled its economy.
The talks were scheduled to conclude by June 30, but negotiators blew through that deadline because they were unable to resolve a number of sticking points.
Negotiations were extended again to July 10 after the parties failed to meet a second deadline on Tuesday, throwing the resolution of the negotiations into doubt.
Kerry will address reporters about the talks at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
President Obama told a group of Senate Democrats on Tuesday he believes there is a less than 50 percent chance a deal is reached.
