Poll finds voters split on Iran deal

About half of Americans support the Iran nuclear deal, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Support increased slightly when questions included more information on the terms of the deal, but it’s popularity has dropped almost 20 points as it has taken shape, according to the poll released Wednesday.

{mosads}Without being given any information on the deal, 45 percent of respondents said they support it, while 44 percent said they were opposed.

When pollsters provided information on monitoring and penalties for violations, support increased to 51 percent and opposition decreased to 41 percent.

Those numbers are compared to November 2013, when 64 percent of respondents said they would support a negotiated agreement. In March, 59 percent said they would support it.

The agreement is likely to move forward next month after Senate Democrats twice blocked Republican attempts to kill it. The Senate is expected to take a third vote Thursday, this time on an amendment that would stop President Obama from lifting sanctions on Iran.

The ABC/Post poll surveyed 1,003 adults by phone between Sept. 7 and 10.
