Poll: Majority thinks artists shouldn’t be required to perform at inauguration

A majority of Americans believe artists shouldn’t be required to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration if they don’t want to, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.

The poll found 56 percent of respondents think celebrities and artists should not perform at the inauguration if they don’t want to and that they should be “free to speak out against a president they do not support.”

Only 31 percent think artists should perform at the inauguration if invited and that when artists turn down invitations to make political statements, it “furthers the divide and disrespects the person who won the presidency.”

Americans’ opinions on the issue fall along party lines.

{mosads}Just 15 percent of Democrats think artists should perform at the inauguration if invited, while 77 percent of Democrats say artists should not perform if they don’t want to.

On the other hand, a majority of Republicans, 53 percent, think artists should perform at the inauguration, while only 32 percent say the opposite.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 28 to 29 among 2,000 registered voters.

Since Trump’s victory, several artists have said they would not perform at the president-elect’s inauguration. 

The Radio City Rockettes and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are both planning to perform at the event.
