iPhone manufacturer considering $7B US factory

Cell phone manufacturer Foxconn is reportedly mulling a plan to open a $7 billion display screen factory in the U.S.

According to Reuters, Foxconn CEO Terry Gou told reporters at a company event on Sunday that the iPhone manufacturer had been considering the move for years, and that SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son had recommended moving forward with it ahead of his meeting with President Trump during the transition.

“I thought it was a private conversation, but then the next morning it was exposed,” Gou said of his talk with Son. “There is such a plan, but it is not a promise. It is a wish.”

{mosads}Gou said that the plan would depend on a number of factors, and would be subject to negotiation with state and federal officials.

Foxconn, based in Taiwan, is a major employer in China and the primary manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone. It also has some operations in Pennsylvania, a state that Gou said would take priority.
