•AGRICULTURE: The Society of American Florists has hired Thelen, Reid, Brown, Raysham & Steiner to lobby on the farm bill and other agriculture issues. Joshua Mecham and Thomas O’Brien are listed as lobbyists on a Senate registration form.
•COMMUNICATIONS: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld will lobby for media firm Cox Enterprises on general communications, media and broadcast issues. Lobbyists listed on the Senate registration form include former Rep. Bill Paxon (R-N.Y.), Joel Jankowsky and Paul Scolese.
{mosads}•CONSUMER GOODS: Van Fleet Associates has registered to lobby for two different companies on issues related to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Lighter-maker Zippo Manufacturing has hired Van Fleet to lobby on CPSC’s reauthorization as well as Department of Homeland Security rules regarding lighters. Paul Payette, Walter Sanders and Townsend Van Fleet are all listed as lobbyists on the Senate registration form. Van Fleet has also registered to represent Indianapolis manufacturer Westbrook Development LLC on CPSC issues.
•EDUCATION: Bond and Co. have registered to lobby for the University of Phoenix on online education issues. Richard Bond and Andy Madden are listed on the Senate registration form.
•ENERGY: The American Wind Energy Association has hired Winston & Strawn LLP to lobby for the extension of a tax credit for the production of electricity from wind energy. John McMickle is the only lobbyist listed on the Senate registration form.
•FOREIGN POLICY: Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman has registered to lobby for a former prime minister of Bangladesh who is locked in a political struggle in her home country. The law firm will represent Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in connection with her house arrest and the government harassment of family members, according to a registration form filed with the Senate. Lobbyists listed include Joseph Lanier, former senior counsel to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
•HEALTH: The Washington Group has been hired by Polymedica Corp. to lobby on Medicare issues. The Senate registration form says the group will be educating members of Congress on issues related to diabetes and pharmaceutical supplies and services. Lobbyists listed include Brett Shogren, a former policy director for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas).
