Senior counsel to Sen. Cornyn joins McBee Strategic

Matt Johnson will be an executive vice president in the firm’s Washington office, the firm confirmed, and will start his new post Monday.

Johnson most recently worked as chief counsel to Cornyn, who is Senate minority whip and a member of the Judiciary Committee.

The Hill learned that Johnson sent a farewell email to contacts last Thursday.

McBee Strategic Consulting earned $5.3 million in lobbying revenue in the first half of this year. In 2012, it took in $11.7 million, representing big-name clients such as GE Energy, American Airlines, JP Morgan Chase, Boeing, Citigroup, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and FedEx.

The firm’s president and chief executive, Steve McBee, said he is “excited” to welcome Johnson to his team.

“His experience and expertise in the judiciary policy space, particularly around intellectual property and patent reform, will provide a huge amount of edge and value-add to our large clients as well as our portfolio of emerging growth companies,” he said in a statement.

McBee Strategic has several tech clients, such as Oracle, McAfee, Google and the Download Fairness Coalition.

Though Johnson held an associate position at a law firm, most of his experience is in the public sector, including working on the first Bush/Cheney campaign.
