Poll: Majority thinks race relations will deteriorate under Trump

A majority of Americans expect race relations to get worse under President Trump, according to a new poll.

The McClatchy-Marist survey released Monday found that 52 percent of Americans think race relations will get worse under the Trump administration, and just 26 percent say they will get better, though results break sharply along partisan lines.

Another 18 percent of Americans think race relations will remain the same under Trump, while 4 percent say they are unsure.

{mosads}Among Democrats, 79 percent expect race relations to get worse under Trump and only 6 percent expect them to improve.

Sixty-three percent of Republicans, however, expect race relations to improve under with the Trump White House. Just 12 percent of Republicans say the opposite.

Among independents, just 24 percent expect race relations to improve under Trump; 54 percent expect they will get worse.

Slightly more than half of Americans, 51 percent, think race relations in the country have gotten worse over the last year, according to the survey. 

Just 10 percent think race relations in the country have improved.

The poll was conducted from Feb. 15 to 19 among 1,073 adults. Its margin of error is 3 percent.
