MSNBC’s Deutsch to Gov. Cuomo: ‘Looking very buff there, I might say’
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) took a shot at MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” while doing an interview on the program, saying, “While you guys are sitting around talking and drinking coffee, I’m working.”
The jab came as Cuomo was asked about possibly running for president in 2020 by regular “Morning Joe” panelist Donny Deutsch, who shared his impression of Cuomo’s build.
{mosads}”Hey, governor, Donny Deutsch. Good to talk to you, my old friend. And, by the way, looking very buff there, I might say,” Deutsch said.
“Now stop it, Donny,” replied host Joe Scarborough.
“Those guns are—” Deutsch began.
“Donny, Donny. I’m a governor here,” Cuomo interrupted.
“Let me ask you a question, obviously because what you’re doing right now is what a leader does and very presidential,” said Deutsch as Cuomo was preparing to board a plane to tour the U.S. Virgin Islands, which were devastated by Hurricane Irma.
“The Democratic Party, a big hole’s there. Nobody running the show there. If I was talking to you off camera I would say, ‘Hey, governor, after you get done with this — and obviously, that’s what we’re talking about — is there a big opening for somebody to take control of the Democratic Party?” Deutsch continued.
“Any thoughts about a presidential run?”
“I’m focusing on being the best governor in the state. I have a reelection next year, Donny, and as you know, I’m a linear guy. I focus on one thing at a time,” said Cuomo, who is up for reelection in November 2018.
“I want to do the best job I can … and I’m not planning any strategy or tactics beyond that. I have my hands full,” he continued.
“I have a dream job and my mentality is very simple: Do what you’re doing, do it well, and stay focused. You get into trouble in life when the lens gets too wide, at least for me. I like to focus on what I’m doing. And I’m out here working. While you guys are sitting around talking and drinking coffee, I’m working.”
“Yes, I know, and we’re upset,” said Scarborough. “We haven’t even gotten to the [Cleveland] Indians’ winning streak yet.”
