TJ Maxx, Marshalls continues paying employees in Puerto Rico even though stores are closed

The company that owns TJ Maxx and Marshalls is continuing to pay employees in Puerto Rico even though many of its stores remain closed.

CNN reported that TJX Companies — which owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods — has kept paying the employees after Hurricane Maria tore through the island earlier this year.

“We believe it is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances,” TJX spokeswoman Erika Tower told the network in a statement.

The company has 29 stores in Puerto Rico, but it is not clear how many of those stores are closed or how many people are employed by those stores.

Puerto Rico is continuing to recover from damage caused when a hurricane tore through the island.

Many on the island are still without electricity and water.

President Trump faced backlash for the federal response to the disaster in Puerto Rico, with some lawmakers criticizing the president for not doing enough to help Puerto Rico following the hurricane.
